The First Half Mile

Man, do I hate the first half mile. I’m a regular runner and yet, even when I’m in shape, that first half mile is rough. But, once I get going, I feel better; and I definitely feel better once I’m done.

Travel is similar. I hate when I’m about to travel. I like being in a new place and usually I enjoy what I’m doing when I get there. But, packing up and getting to that plane—that’s rough.

Last night, my wife had a work event. She didn’t want to go but she did and saw people that she had not seen in years. Ultimately, she had a great time. However, that first half mile—actually leaving the house—was hard.

We’re creatures of inertia. It’s hard to leave a comfortable place. Even if we can convince ourselves it’s for our own good or that we might actually enjoy it. I think overcoming that inertia is essential to us thriving.

So how do I run that first half mile? I’ve found it useful to address this phenomenon. I know I’m going to struggle the first half mile until I get warmed up and in a rhythm. I know I am not going to want to travel as I’m packing up and saying goodbye to my family. I know heading into a big social situation will give me some anxiety. You might have different ‘first half miles’—see if you can name them.

A few weeks ago, I swam in some very cold water. Luckily, I was wearing a wetsuit. Jumping in—that first half mile—wasn’t as bad as I thought and I stayed in for about 45 minutes. Even though I hated the thought of that first blast of cold water, it was worth it. I hope you conquer your first half miles.
